You read "hepatitis" in a document and know right away it means viêm gan. But in a video case discussion with a foreign colleague, they say a sentence with that word at normal speed, and you freeze for a couple of seconds because the sound doesn't match the word you've read before.

Why medical English is harder than everyday English
Most of the everyday English words you learned before have Anglo-Saxon roots: short, familiar to the ear. Medical vocabulary is built from Latin and ancient Greek roots, so a native English speaker who hasn't studied medicine doesn't understand "nephrectomy" either. You're not at any disadvantage compared to them on this point.
The second difficulty: words that look familiar but whose meaning is completely different from everyday usage. "Acute" in ordinary life suggests sharpness; in medicine it just means a severe, sudden-onset condition. "Benign" sounds like a compliment for gentleness; here it means a tumor is non-cancerous.
Stress patterns and the spots where the ear tends to slip
Take "tachycardia" as an example. Look at the spelling and it makes sense right away: tachy (fast) plus cardia (heart), fast heart rate. But it's pronounced /ˌtæk.ɪˈkɑr.di.ə/, with the stress falling on "car," not on "tachy" the way you'd read it from the spelling. This pattern repeats in most words with the suffixes -itis, -ectomy, -emia, -osis: the stress clusters near the suffix, one or two syllables from the end, rather than on the first root.
This mistake only shows up when listening and when speaking. It's also one reason why Vietnamese learners have weaker listening comprehension than their vocabulary should allow.
The two roots "nephr/o" (kidney) and "neur/o" (nerve) sound nearly the same when spoken quickly, so "nephrology" and "neurology" are easy to mix up if you're not used to the /fr/ consonant cluster.
The three suffixes "-otomy," "-ostomy," "-ectomy" mean completely different things: cutting open, creating an opening, and removing entirely. But they end almost the same way, and listening carelessly leads to picking the wrong one.
A test result that comes back "positive" sounds like good news in everyday language, but for many tests, a positive result is actually the bad news, while "negative" is the good one.
Abbreviations follow no shared pronunciation rule. A single line of clinical notes can contain BP, HR, IV, NPO one after another, each read letter by letter, while some other abbreviations are read as a single word. There's no way to guess in advance — you just have to get used to hearing each specific one.

Try assembling four commonly encountered words:

How to study once you're already wearing the white coat
Medical students learn terminology to pass exams. Someone already working needs it in three different places: reading medical literature and orders, listening in on consultations with foreign patients, and presenting a case. Those three things call for three different ways of practicing.
- Stage one, reading to regain speed. Each week pick a condition you see often, read an article about it written for healthcare staff, then read a piece written for patients on the same topic. Write down each pair, the technical term and its everyday counterpart.
- Stage two, catching the spoken word, not just the text. Each week, one clinical podcast episode with a transcript: listen to two minutes, transcribe it sentence by sentence, then check it against the transcript. Most of the gap isn't in the terminology but in the very ordinary connecting words around it.
- Stage three, being able to say a case out loud. Each week, build a ninety-second presentation for a case you just saw, following the familiar order: age and presentation, course of illness, examination and lab findings, management plan. Record it, listen back, then cut out the places where you stumbled.

Frequently asked questions
How much medical vocabulary should I learn to be able to read professional materials?
There's no fixed number, and the goal isn't a word count anyway. Once you know the core root words in the first table, you can infer the meaning of most new words.
How is medical English different from pharmacy or nursing English?
The Latin and Greek roots are shared across all three. But nursing leans toward care procedures by shift, while pharmacy leans toward dosage forms and drug interactions, so mastering the common part first will get you there faster.
Do I need to learn IPA symbols to pronounce medical terms correctly?
You don't need to be able to read all of IPA. But each time you learn a new word you should mark which syllable carries the stress, because as covered in the stress section above, that's where mistakes happen far more than with individual sound pronunciation.
Is learning medical vocabulary through movies or medical series effective?
Watching shows helps your ear get used to context, but the dialogue is scripted for drama and doesn't accurately reflect how people actually talk. Listening to content with a transcript you can cross-check will be closer to the real thing.
