A Roadmap for Beginners Starting Listening Practice

If you're still unsure where to start and where you stand in your English practice, you can check out the roadmap "Steps to Improve Your English Level" that I wrote back in 2015. This Facebook Note of mine was shared widely (600 shares) and was even included in a study-abroad handbook. This Note is also the very motivation that led me to build the WELE program.

The WELE program focuses on training listening skills through dictation practice and helps you quickly regain your confidence.
In most cases, you can't understand what you hear not because you lack vocabulary, but because you don't have a suitable roadmap. Watching movies/listening to the radio/listening to English songs before your brain has gotten used to each individual word will only make you discouraged and afraid.
With WELE, the program uses English lessons that are read very slowly. 90% of you, when listening to these lessons, will confirm that you CAN understand spoken English. On top of that, the program also provides hints within the listening exercise to help you understand the content and make it easier to guess the words.
For those just starting out with listening practice, in the first 2 weeks, you should begin with the Spotlight lessons, where the program provides hints for up to 75% of the words. These listening exercises are very short, the English is read slowly, without word linking, and combined with the hint system, they'll give you the best listening experience.

Note: if you still find these lessons difficult, don't give up right away. Each lesson has a "View words to fill in" list. It'll cost you 5 xu, but you'll be able to see all the words needed to fill in the blanks (not in the order they appear in the lesson). All you need to do is recognize how each word is pronounced, and choose the appropriate box for each word. This way, you're guaranteed to find the word you need to fill in.

After you complete the first 1-2 lessons, share your results in the zalo group of wele-learn.com, so we can help guide you on what speed to listen to for the next lessons or which listening sources to move on to.
For the following 2 weeks, we suggest you listen to the same lessons above again, but with only 50% of the words hinted:
-
ESL 4006750 About Sleep Lv 2
-
ESL 4008050 Uses of Bamboo Lv2
-
ESL 4006350 Yelling At Children Lv2
-
ESL 4001650 Thirteen Healthy Habits Lv2
For the 2 weeks after that, listen to the same lessons above again but with only 25% of the words hinted:
-
ESL 4006775 About Sleep Lv3
-
ESL 4008075 Uses of Bamboo Lv3
-
ESL 4006375 Yelling At Children Lv3
-
ESL 4001675 Thirteen Healthy Habits Lv3
After listening to the 12 lessons above, you'll be fairly confident listening to these lessons without needing hints anymore. From there, you can continue listening to other lessons in the program.
In general, after you've listened to about 25 Spotlight English lessons, you can gradually start switching over to 6 Minute English; and after listening to 50 lessons with the program, your listening ability will have improved significantly.
The team has set up a public class with ready-made listening lessons, which you can join automatically by clicking the link below: https://wele-learn.com/vi/courses/31/6-tuan-lay-lai-tu-tin-ve-viec-nghe-tieng-anh
Below is an example of a user who did really well with the program — after finishing 12 listening lessons, she gained confidence and moved on to tackling longer/harder listening lessons. In just 1 month, she mastered nearly 3000 English words (and to achieve that, over 35 hours she listened to and transcribed nearly 35,000 words).
