Why automotive English is harder to hear than to read

A maintenance document can cram five or six abbreviations into one sentence: ECU, ABS, OBD-II, DTC, ADAS. Vietnamese translations usually keep the original abbreviation, so you're used to the written form without necessarily being used to how it's spoken aloud. ECU is read letter by letter, "i-si-diu." ADAS is read as a single word instead. There's no rule that tells you in advance which one is read which way — you just have to get used to it by listening.

The person speaking English to you in this field isn't always a native speaker. Spots where the ear tends to slip

Back to the sentence at the start of the article: check the torque converter before you condemn the transmission. Spoken at normal speed, the final consonant of check nearly disappears, torque and converter stick together into one continuous chunk, and condemn is rare enough in everyday English that the ear has no ready reflex for it. It's very easy to split the words in the wrong place, catching only the sound "tork" and losing the rest.

Torque and horsepower often get used interchangeably. Torque is twisting force, horsepower is the rate of doing work — two cars with the same horsepower can feel completely different when accelerating because their torque differs. Rotor changes meaning depending on the system. In the brake system, rotor is exactly the brake disc. In the electrical system, rotor is the spinning part of an alternator or electric motor. Hearing just the word rotor isn't enough — you have to catch the word right in front of it too.
