6 Minute English: A Dictation Source Close to BBC News Level

6-minute English is a very long-running listening series from BBC Learning English. BBC Learning English has produced a great many programs (much like Vietnam Television) — most programs stop after a short while, but 6-minute English alone has run on almost endlessly, comparable to VTV3's "Đường lên đỉnh Olympia".

The reason it has been kept going for so long is its large listenership as well as its abundant source material. The content team can pick a small piece of BBC news or a short dialogue, and then the two hosts talk it through, sharing the vocabulary in the piece and explaining it in the easiest-to-understand way. Listening to 6-minute English episodes is the best way for a listener to "program" their English system, defining word by word, without having to look things up in a dictionary.

I always recommend 6-minute English episodes to everyone who wants to maintain or improve their English: this includes people who already have the IELTS score they need but want to expand their vocabulary before studying abroad, people who are already studying/working abroad and still want to listen to more interesting bits of news, and people who studied abroad but are no longer working in an English-using environment.

6-minute episodes move quite fast for beginners, so for people who are new to the program I usually recommend starting out with dictation practice using Spotlight English, and once your level improves you can move up to listening to 6-minute English.
