How to Practice Listening Effectively with WELE — Anna Hiền Shares Her Tips

Yesterday I shared about self-practicing listening on the site www.wele-learn.com, and a few people asked about how to study, so today I'll share more details about this site.

The site was founded over 10 years ago. I happened to come across it and have been using it for a few months now, and my level has improved, you could say. The first time I practiced listening, I chose Spotlight because it's read slowly and clearly, but I still only scored a bit over 80% on the exercises. After some persistence, I could understand more, and my scores went up to 98-100%. Now I'm challenging myself with 6 Minute English, BBC.

The interface and how it works are very simple. You register an account at this link:

Go in and choose listening material according to your level. The site has lots of sources — Spotlight, BBC, TED, TOEIC, etc. You can find these sources all over the internet, but what's great about WELE is:

• For lower-level learners: choose listening with hints, so you can see the content and just fill in a few missing words — no pressure of having to transcribe a whole passage.

• For higher-level learners: choose listening without hints, and it's basically a blank exercise where you fill in 99.9% of the content.

You might say: how is this different from the usual dictation-on-paper method everyone does? But I can confirm it's DIFFERENT, VERY DIFFERENT. When you finish transcribing and want to check whether you got it right, you select "show wrong boxes" to see where you made mistakes, or if you couldn't catch everything, you select "view words to fill in" and you'll get a list of the missing words to choose from and fill in.

Once you finish transcribing and submit, WELE grades you instantly. (picture 5)

You won't have to waste time sitting there checking word by word, sentence by sentence against the original transcript, because WELE does that automatically for you.
