From Zero to TOEIC 800+: What I Learned About Listening

The journey from zero to 800+ TOEIC and a valuable lesson about listening skills.

Starting out as someone with zero English foundation, I reached my goal of 800+ after 8 months. Out of everything, what I've taken away most clearly is that listening skill plays an extremely important role. I spent the entire first 3-4 months focusing on listening practice and applying the dictation method. This is truly a very effective method, and in particular, the website www.wele-learn.com helped me a lot in improving this skill (I highly encourage you all to apply it).

Once my listening ability reached around 60/100, I only then started switching to reading practice. I prioritized practicing Part 7 first to strengthen my reading comprehension and build up vocabulary. One special point in my journey is that even though I had zero grammar foundation at all, I didn't choose to dive straight into studying grammar from the start. Instead, I learned the grammar structures that appeared in the reading sections, gradually accumulating them in a more natural way.

Only about a month and a half before the exam did I focus all my time on studying grammar. By that point, since I already had a base amount of vocabulary, doing grammar exercises was no longer as discouraging as before. Another reason I left grammar for last is that grammar is easily forgotten if not practiced regularly, so studying grammar close to the exam date would help me remember it longer.
